OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has signed a major
collaboration deal with India’s Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to leverage its
data storage infrastructure; requiring up to 100 megawatts of power.
This partnership is part of a massive $500 billion project
called Stargate, aimed at building cutting-edge infrastructure including power
grids, high-performance computing systems, and large-scale data centers to
support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence technologies. The
initiative is spearheaded by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, signaling the global
scale of the project.
For TCS, this is a landmark move. Last year, the company
revealed plans to invest $7 billion in building energy-intensive data centers
in India, each requiring 1 gigawatt of power; enough to power hundreds of
thousands of homes.
India is quickly emerging as a hotspot for tech investment,
particularly in AI infrastructure. Global giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, and
Microsoft are leading the charge, while domestic conglomerates such as Reliance
and the Adani Group are also making significant strides.
The partnership with TCS will allow OpenAI’s ChatGPT to scale
its operations in India, with plans to make the AI assistant accessible to all
TCS employees, numbering in the tens of thousands, over the coming years.
Currently, OpenAI reports that over 100 million people in
India are using ChatGPT, highlighting the enormous appetite for AI tools in the
country.
This collaboration not only strengthens OpenAI’s global
footprint but also positions India as a key player in the AI revolution,
capable of supporting massive AI workloads and next-generation technologies.
