An army commander is named prime minister by a Madagascar leader.

Andry Rajoelina, the leader of Madagascar, declared he was renouncing a power-sharing agreement with the opposition and appointed a senior army officer as the nation's new prime minister. Colonel Camille Albert Vital will succeed Eugene Mangalaza as prime minister, according to a statement sent by Mr. Rajoelina's office on Sunday.

It was previously anticipated that he will appoint Cecile Manorohanta as prime minister. Additionally, he eliminated the co-presidential positions. Colonel Vital stated that organizing elections and boosting security were his top goals in a speech that was televised nationally. He urged Madagascar's citizens to cooperate with his government, even if they were political adversaries.

In a coup in March of last year, Mr. Rajoelina assumed control. He made the announcement that legislative elections would be held on March 20 of the next year on national television on Wednesday. Presidential elections were not mentioned by him.

In recent months, a number of power-sharing deals have been mediated by international mediators, but they have all failed. Mr. Rajoelina's presidency has been rejected by the African Union and other regional organizations.
